Open to: for everyone who wishes to present for the Prize

WHY PUBLIC SPACE?

With ideas of equality, plurality and progress constituting part of its very foundations, the European city is today facing new challenges arising from its exponential growth and increasing social and cultural complexity. Some of society’s main problems are radically expressed in the city’s public spaces. Segregation, rampant construction, homogenisation and privatisation of urban space are some of the phenomena that are putting into jeopardy the ideal of the open, plural and democratic community that has always been so distinctive of the European city.

The European Prize for Urban Public Space is a biennial competition that aims to recognise and encourage the creation, recovery and improvement of public space in the understanding that the state of public space is a clear indicator of the civic and collective health of our cities.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

The sponsoring institutions of the Seventh European Prize for Urban Public Space are the following:

- Barcelona: Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona – CCCB)
- Frankfurt: Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM)
- Helsinki: Museum of Finnish Architecture (MFA)
- London: The Architecture Foundation (AF)
- Paris: La Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine
- Rotterdam: Nederlands Architectuurinstituut (NAI)
- Vienna: Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W)

The Prize, which is honorific by nature, is awarded jointly to the authors and promoters of the projects chosen by the Jury. The prize-winners (of the Prize itself and Honourable Mentions) will receive a Diploma confirming the award. In addition, the winner of the Prize will receive a commemorative plaque which is to be installed in the prize-winning public space.
The prize-winning works, the finalists and a selection made by the Jury will be published in the European Archive of Urban Public Space, which brings together and makes available to the public the best projects that have been presented in the competition since its inception.

INTERNATIONAL JURY

The Jury of the 2012 Prize will consist of the following members:

President: Josep Llinàs, who will be representing the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona

Jury members:

Ole Bouman, director of the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut (NAI)
Dietmar Steiner, director of the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W)

Secretary: David Bravo i Bordas, representing the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona

The Jury will take into consideration only those interventions that comply with the conditions of participation and it is empowered to declare the competition null and void. Secretariat functions will be performed by the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona, which will designate the secretary who is to assist the jury and produce the minutes of the sessions during the selection process of the Prize winners.

SCHEDULE

- 17 October 2011 – opening of the campaign of calling for entries for the Prize

- 17 October 2011 – 19 January 2012 – period of registration

- 5 March – 11 April 2012 – first part of the Jury’s deliberations (on-line)

- 19 and 20 April 2012 – Jury’s working sessions at the CCCB

- 29 June 2012 – prize-giving ceremony

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

Works that have created, recovered or improved public space within the geographic limits of the Council of Europe in the years 2010 and 2011 may present for the Prize. These entries must be presented by the authors or the institutions that have sponsored the public space project.
Given that some urban public space interventions are of very long duration, any project that has not been completely finalised in the time period of 2010-2011 may still present for the Prize if enough phases of the envisaged end result have been completed to enable evaluation of the eventual repercussions of the intervention as a whole within its urban setting.
Anyone wishing to present for the Prize must complete and submit, within the established time limit, all the documentation stipulated in the Rules.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The criteria that will govern selection of the prize-winning projects from among those that are presented for the European Prize for Urban Public Space will not only be related with the quality of the work from a strictly architectural point of view since the jury will also consider other aspects in its evaluation of the effects of the urban transformation that has taken place in the specific setting and its impact on collective life:
- The explicitly urban nature of the intervention. The size of the city or town is not a limiting factor although priority will be given to medium-sized or large municipalities and those with a more general urban significance.
- The public ownership and/or clearly public-spirited vocation of the project.
- Appropriateness of interventions to the functions required of public space, from those directly linked with citizens’ occupation of a space, through to those pertaining to the collective imaginary.
- Capacity of the interventions to reduce social fractures within the city and eliminate physical and/or symbolic barriers in order to enhance quality of life for the inhabitants.
- Contribution of the projects in the domain of environmental improvement, in promoting public transport and innovation in the treatment of public installations, energy resources and urban waste.
- The degree of citizen participation and engagement in the conception, production and/or subsequent maintenance of the space. Degree of acceptance of the project by users.
- Transversal character of the planning concepts and/or objectives that have guided the project (sociology, demography, history, architecture, economy, engineering, landscaping, anthropology).

DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED

The documentation required from anyone who wishes to present for the Prize is:

- 3 rigid panels in DIN A3 format with graphic and textual information about the work.
- A description of the work, approximately 4,500 characters in length, written in English and including an account of the previous state of the site, the aim of the intervention, a description of the intervention, and a final assessment of the project.
- A minimum of 10 photographs and plans of the work.

ENTRY PROCEDURE

The entry procedure for the Prize, which is free of charge, consists of two parts:

On-line registration

To begin your registration click on the REGISTRATION button on the upper left part of this page.

The participant must register on-line by filling in, first, the basic form regarding the project and contact person and, then, providing all the other necessary information (technical file for the project, 3 panels, descriptive account, information concerning author/s, promoter/s, and photographs), besides uploading the photos and plans of the work.

The person entering for the Prize can continue to modify and complete the registration file as often as s/he wishes until the registration period closes. On-line registration automatically closes on 19 January 2012.

If the person entering for the Prize is presenting more than one work, the on-line registration procedure must be followed for each work separately.

Detailed instructions regarding on-line registration may be found at

The following documentation must be submitted to the CCCB:

. One printed and signed copy of the Rights Sheet (this may be found in the procedure for on-line registration) once the data have been duly provided.

. 3 numbered panels: these must be rigid (in foam board or similar material) in DIN A3 format and oblong orientation. They must contain the following information:

- Map (or photomap) showing the location of the work inside its urban context (to scale).
- A pair of photographs of the site before and after the intervention, preferably from the same vantage point.
- Photographs of the finished work, indicating the two that are considered to be most representative. Images showing citizen use of the new space will be positively valued.
- Textual explanations in English where deemed necessary.

The documentation must be submitted in a well protected packet through the post, delivered by messenger or in person at the CCCB before 23 January at 2 p.m. In the case of packages sent by post or messenger, the date of dispatch must be certified at the post office or by the messenger service, and the CCCB is to be notified of the dispatch of the package at publicspace@publicspace.org on the same day.
Entry rules

Manufacturers and designers from around the world are invited to compete for the internationally recognised mark of quality, the red dot. The condition for taking part in the “red dot award: product design 2012” is that the products entered are made in series production and were not available on the market prior to 1 January 2010 or will be available on the market prior to 1 July 2012.

Jury

The jury for the red dot design award has high-level expertise and is absolutely independent. Members of the jury for the “red dot award: product design 2012” pledge to a “Code of Honour” and are excluded from taking part in the competition.

Furthermore, the red dot jury comprises design experts of international repute, whose background allows them to consciously assess the special intercultural aspects of design.

The products are assessed in nineteen different groups. The differentiation in the product categories means that the expertise is even more focused, as experts who assess the entries are carefully selected for each individual product group. The jury teams appraise, test and rate the products in detail on location, based on criteria such as degree of innovation, functionality, self-explanatory quality or ecological soundness.

Awards

red dot: best of the best
The “red dot: best of the best” is awarded for groundbreaking design and is the top prize in the “red dot award: product design”. This prize is reserved for the best products in a category.

red dot
The “red dot” is the prize for high design quality. The international jury only awards this sought-after seal of quality to projects that set themselves apart significantly from comparable projects thanks to their excellent design.

honourable mention

red dot: design team of the year
Becoming the “red dot: design team of the year” is a very special honour. Since 1991, red dot has been selecting one design team every year that shapes markets around the world through consistently innovative design achievements. The list of winners in recent years reads like the “who is who” of international design, including such renowned companies as Apple, Nokia, Pininfarina, adidas, LG Electronics, BMW, Bose, Tupperware, Hilti – or currently Grohe.

Open to: international

On 9th October 2011, the 22nd anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution of 1989, the City of Leipzig will hold an open application process for a Monument to Freedom and Unity.

The Leipzig Monument to Freedom and Unity is to be a national monument which transcends over the City through its location, stature and significance. It is to address a wide democratic public and above all, future generations through its political and artistic demands.

In May 2011, Leipzig City Council designated Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz as the location for the monument, directly on the Leipziger Ring, where the demonstration took place in 1989. The Leipzig Monument to Freedom and Unity is to be inaugurated on 9th October 2014 in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution in what will be the newly named ´Platz der Friedlichen Revolution`.

Artists, architects and landscape architects from all over the world are invited to submit an application by 16th December 2011 at the latest. 40 applicants/teams will then be chosen to take part in the restricted competition according to RPW 2008 (guide lines for planning competitions) . The selection of participants will be carried out by the client of Leipzig in consultation with a selection committee consisting of external experts.

Burkhard Jung, Lord Mayor of Leipzig, hopes that the competition will attract international attention and asks artists, architects as well as representatives of other professional categories mentioned to participate. The Government and the Free State of Saxony have been preparing the competition procedure in cooperation with the City of Leipzig for three years. The Lord Mayor thanks both for their support so far and also for their readiness to remain active in further proceedings. The Government and Free State will be represented in both the selection committee and the jury of the competition. (For a list of jury members, see below).

The financial framework for the whole project is 6.5 million euro, of which 5 million euro will be from the Government and 1.5 million euro from the Free State of Saxony. A gross amount of 175.000 euro will be available for the competition.

Prior to the competition brief, the City of Leipzig organised a work-shop phase at which mainly citizens but also experts aired their opinions. Of special importance are the results of the youth work shop where young people from Leipzig and twin towns Hannover, Krakow and Houston, addressed the specifications of the competition. According to their assessment, it is important to carry the experiences of the Peaceful Revolution into the future and, above all, to bring home the events of the revolution to young people.

Backround of the project

The memory of 1989′s Peaceful Revolution is at a very sensitive and pivotal transitional point: today’s 20-25 year olds are the first generation for whom 1989 is not a part of their own personal biography. So far, 1989 and its importance have been passed along to those who were not there by means of memories and the stories of those who were. This “communicative memory”, however, can last only three generations at the most and is very dependent on locations, rituals, historical research, debate among society’s citizens and, finally, monuments. For this reason, the christening of a monument 25 years after the Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig, the revolution’s point of origin, is the right sign in the right place at the right time.

With its decision of December 4, 2008, the German Bundestag cleared the way for Leipzig’s Monument to Peace and Unity. Accordingly, Leipzig’s city council decreed on June 7, 2009, that the mayor was to begin the process of having one created. The federal government provided up to 5 million Euros for the monument with the Saxonian State Parliament agreeing on June 17, 2010 to contribute another 1.5 million Euros.

This Monument to Peace and Unity is recognition of Leipzig’s major role in the revolution. The peaceful outcome of October 9, 1989′s massive public protests, in which over 70,000 people participated, played a key role in the revolution’s further development. Leipzig’s monument stands for the variety and scope of the courageous rebellion throughout the entire GDR. Individual actions and smaller initiatives grew into a massive movement in the autumn of 1989. As a national monument, its location, design and significance are meant to extend beyond Leipzig. Additionally, it makes reference to the freedom movements that were taking place in Central and Eastern Europe and which were important prerequisites for the events of East Germany’s Peaceful Revolution.

Public Participation

Intense and sometimes controversial discussions took place regarding the location and meaning of the monument. The experiences gained in the competitive process held in Berlin also showed that a precise and clear task definition for both content and artistic goals was of absolute importance. For this reason a “workshop phase” with the participation of the city’s citizenry was established in Leipzig as a precursor to the actual competition itself. The goal was to establish the central and key messages for the competition and to provide the city council with a basis for deciding the monuments location.

Workshop Phase

The workshop phase began in January, 2011 as a survey concerning the monument and asking for ideas and comments was sent to 3,000 selected, representative citizens of Leipzig. More than half of the respondents wrote that the Monument to Freedom and Unity would be of great importance for the city of Leipzig.

In February, 2011, young people from Leipzig and its partner cities Hannover, Krakow and Houston participated in an international youth workshop where they laid out the central messages for the Leipzig monument. These included non-violence, courage and the determinedness with which the demonstrators protested for their basic and civil liberties in the fall of 1989 and which should be both inspiration and motivation for coming generations when dealing with processes of political change. The results of the workshop were then worked into a two day expert workshop including citizens of Leipzig, civil rights activists form Plauen, Erfurt and Leipzig as well as historians, art historians and civil engineering experts. At the beginning of March, the core messages defined during the workshop phase regarding the monument, the artistic design and its location were presented to the public and discussed in a citizen’s forum.

Location – Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz

As a result of the meetings, citizen participation and the youth workshop, Leipzig’s city council declared a clear resolution on the 18th of May, 2011. The Leipzig Monument to Freedom and Unity, meant to remind all of, among other things, the civil courage and peaceful protests of the brave East German citizens, shall be erected at the Wilhelm Leuschner Platz. Because of its direct proximity to the “Promenadenring” and the New City Hall, this location has a direct spatial correspondence to the Monday demonstrations and original venues. In addition, it offers the special opportunity to create a new public space which provides the perfect prerequisites for the national dimension of the monument. The goal is to christen the monument on the 9th of October, 2014, the 25th anniversary of the peaceful revolution.

The chosen book for this year’s competition is Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories. To enter the competition you will need to submit three illustrations and a binding design.

2. Select and illustrate three scenes, one from each selected story

Each entrant should illustrate three scenes from The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, one from each of the three stories we have selected. The selected stories are The Bloody Chamber, Puss-in-Boots and The Company of Wolves. Only illustrations from these stories will be considered. Your illustrations should be portrait, not landscape. Please read the document below before starting work (here http://competitions.houseofillustration.org.uk/folio-2011/files/2010/09/The-Illustrations1.pdf)

3. Design a binding

Entrants should also design and submit a binding to accompany the three illustrations. The binding design can be from any of the stories or inspired by the overall tone and themes of the book. Please read the two documents below about Folio bindings before beginning work on it. The binding does not need to be finished artwork (although the three illustrations do).

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter

The Bloody Chamber is an astonishing collection from a virtuoso writer. Angela Carter’s masterly reworking of ‘Bluebeard’s Castle’, a bawdy ‘Puss-in-Boots’ and a startling version of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ are all darkly sensual, subversive takes on traditional fairy stories, as shocking today as when the collection first appeared in 1979. These are Gothic tales, cruel tales, tales of wonder, tales of terror, fabulous narratives that deal directly with the imagery of the unconcious, with narratives suggested by traditional Western European fairy tales.

To her readers’ delight, Carter found she had conjured up an exotic new hybrid: ‘My intention was not to do “versions” or, as the American edition of the book said, horribly, “adult” fairy tales, but to extract the latent content from the traditional stories.’

‘One of the century’s greatest writers’ Sunday Times
‘Magnificent set pieces of fastidious sensuality’ Ian McEwan

JUDGES

Angela Barrett has illustrated over thirty books for children and adults. Winner of the W H Smith prize for The Hidden House and runner-up for Snow White, Angela has also taken part in numerous group shows and had a one-woman exhibition in London in 2000. As Joanna Carey wrote in the Guardian, ‘There is a stillness and a quiet atmospheric intensity to her illustrations which appeal across a wide range of understanding. She doesn’t simplify things – on the contrary, she both assumes and respects the intelligence of her readers – and her richly allusive work, full of detail and symbolism, invites and rewards as much time and investigation as you care to give it.’

Flora Craig has been the Project Director of the House of Illustration since 2007. A History of Art graduate from Edinburgh University, she has extensive experience of leading visual arts organisations and has worked at Modern Art Oxford, Camden Arts Centre and the Crafts Council.

Matthew Richardson’s illustration work has been widely used in book, newspaper and magazine publishing and design, television and advertising. He studied at Middlesex University and Central Saint Martins. Clients have included the V&A, Penguin, Adobe, Vodaphone, Decca, The British Council, BBC, NatWest, EMI, The New Yorker, Harpers and The Royal Parks.

Matthew has taught at art colleges across the country. He has won several prizes for his work, including Bronze, Silver and Gold from the Association of Illustrators and was the winner of the House of Illustration and Folio Society’s inaugural book illustration competition Getting Inside The Outsider earlier this year.

Catherine Taylor has been with the Folio Society since 2002 and has been Publisher since 2008. A graduate in English and Philosophy, her postgraduate studies in publishing and printing have led to a varied career encompassing the British Library, Microsoft and Amazon. Catherine is also a prolific literary critic and has written for The Guardian, Telegraph, Sunday Times and Independent on Sunday.

Marina Warner is author of numerous books, including the novels The Lost Father (l988, short-listed for the Booker), Indigo (l992), and The Leto Bundle (2000), and many short stories; her many award-winning studies of mythology and fairy-tales include Alone of All Her Sex: The Myth and the Cult of the Virgin Mary (l976), From the Beast to the Blonde (1994) and No Go the Bogeyman: Scaring, Lulling and Making Mock (1998). Recent studies include Fantastic Metamorphoses; Other Worlds (2002), and Phantasmagoria: Spirit Visions, Metaphors, and Media (2006), a study of phantasms and modern technologies. Her new book Stranger Magic will be published by Chatto in November this

Joe Whitlock-Blundell has been Design and Production Director of The Folio Society for over twenty years, responsible for all aspects of the books’ appearance: typographic design, art direction, choice of materials and manufacturing quality. In this capacity he has seen well over 1000 different titles into print. He is also a photographer with a number of books and one-man exhibitions to his name.
